On the Golden Porch
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (April, 1989)
Authors: Tatyana Tolstaya, Tat'iana Tolstaia, and Tatana Tolstaya
Average review score:

A visual art work of words
Her writing is like nothing else "without boarders of fences," the inocences of childhood and the sorrow, boringness of life comes a live like the sun at dawn through her words which blow like the wind across her pages.

Magical!!

This is a book that expands the mind of what to expect from literature.

A book of great humility, wonderfuly silent
The book was given to me by my writing teacher who I respected greatly. She rarely makes gifts of books; yet I soon understood why she selected it. It is a quiet book with no pretense of art or gallery; for this reason it contains great art and a wonderful gallery of images. To be sure my even reviewing it stikes one with a terrible mistrust--as even now I mistrust what I say. It is the lyrical authority of T.T. which makes me happy to praise it, and I do. Its tastes in subject and angle are supurb. (Thank-you to Lucia Berlin for the present of T.T.)

Opening Night on Broadway: A Critical Quotebook of the Golden Era of the Musical Theatre, Oklahoma! (1964)
Published in Hardcover by Music Sales Ltd (November, 1990)
Author: Steven Suskin
Average review score:

Musical lovers catnip!
If you love musicals, you can spend hours poring over this collection of reviews for the Broadway musicals that followed in the wake of OKLAHOMA. Hits and flops, all are here -- with some great insights and theatre diah provided by Suskin. For serious research or just plain fun reading, this is one of the most rewarding books ever published on the subject. (And the sequel is equally worthwhile!)

One of the Best Books on the History of Broadway Musicals
I bought "Opening Night on Broadway" when it was first published. I found it to be much more than a written recorded history of the Broadway Musical. It is a time capsule that captures the feeling of the periods when these shows first opened. The reader can almost feel what it was like to be there in 1956 at the opening of "My Fair Lady". Mr. Suskin gives useful biographical information about some of the theater's biggest stars. As someone involved in the business end of the theatre, I also enjoyed finding out whether or not a show was a financial success or failure. My only criticism is, I wish the book was laid out chronologically, not alphabetically. That way readers could get a better perspective of what else was running when "Guys and Dolls", or "Kiss Me Kate" or even "Donnybrook opened" All in all though, I found "Opening Night.." to be the hit of the season

Oranges on Golden Mountain
Published in Paperback by Puffin (April, 2003)
Authors: Elizabeth E. Partridge and Aki Sogabe
Average review score:

A beautifully illustrated immigrant story
"Oranges on Golden Mountain" is an excellent children's book. The text by Elizabeth Partridge is complemented by Aki Sogabe's colorful illustrations.

"Oranges" tells the story of Jo Lee, a Chinese boy who emigrates to California, where he works as a fisherman with his uncle. He misses his mother, who is still in China, but he plants orange branches that she gave him to take on his journey.

This is a realistic immigrant story with some fantastic/supernatural touches that evoke traditional Chinese beliefs. Illustrator Aki Sogabe creates many memorable scenes: a letter writer engaged in Chinese calligraphy, the Dragon King flying over a stormy ocean, Jo Lee tending his orange saplings, and more. To sum up: this is an excellent book for children of all cultures.

A wonderful Chinese immigrant tale.
Jo Lee has to leave China because his family orchard can not support everyone after two dry years in a row. Mother uses the last of the money Father sent to get Jo Lee to Fourth Uncle in California. She knows he will have food there and learn to fish. Jo Lee's comfort is that he can send his Hun, his dream spirit, to keep in touch with his family in China. He leaves his family orchard for California with the bundle of orange tree twigs his mother gives to him. When he reaches Golden Mountain, Fourth Uncle helps him plant the twigs.

When the orange twigs root and bloom, Jo Lee's hope bloom too. Then, when he sleeps, his Hun travels to China to tell his mother. A heart-tugging story of the sacrifice made by a Chinese boy to help his family during hard times.

The cut paper drawings, by illustrator Aki Sogabe, beautifully compliment this story. The white caps, the swirling water, the fishing net, the misty Hun, and the clouds are superb illustrations for this simple little story.

Philadelphia Murals and the Stories They Tell
Published in Hardcover by Temple Univ Press (15 November, 2002)
Authors: Jane Golden, Robin Rice, Monica Yant Kinney, David Graham, and Jack Ramsdale
Average review score:

A Coffee Table Book that Reads like a Novel
This beautiful book tells the story of the wonderful murals that you see all over Philadelphia. It is more than just a pretty book, however, because it is also the story of Jane Golden and how the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network started and how it has grown over the years. The pictures are photographed with amazing accuracy, and the authors have maintained a professional attitude while making the reader feel compelled to continue reading. The book makes you want to see in person all the wondrous walls that Jane Golden and her muralists have created. A great gift and an even greater find.

Wow! I didn't know Philadelphia had so many murals!
What a surprise I had in learning that Philadelphia, a city I've lived in for over ten years, has over 2,000 murals. And,in this book, they are beautifully displayed (well, not all 2000) and discussed. I learned about the artists who created the murals, the communities where the murals are, and just lots of interesting details about the mural arts program in Philadelphia--the most prolific in the country. And, I can't say enough about how spectacularly beautiful the photographs are. If you're ever in Philadelphia, you must buy this book and take a stroll through some of the neighborhoods that house the murals. There's even a map.

Plays 1: Golden Girls-Tissue-Salonika-Real Estate (Collection)
Published in Paperback by Methuen Publishing, Ltd (February, 1991)
Author: Louise Page
Average review score:

an essential dramatist
as fine a writer as england has produced since the second world war. these plays represent bond simply and completely, as a man of passion and vision and a writer that any reader or writer MUST reckon with if they wish to have an understanding of modern drama. genius, and handed out when the word is knowingly overused. here it is earned.

A social dramatist with insight into modern society.
If you are considering the plays of Bond there is no better place to start than here, at the beginning of his career. This volume contains his first three plays. Whether you have seen thse works performed or not is irrelevant. Just reading them is an interesting experience. This is essential modern literature! Bond's introductions (to all the volumes of his collected plays) are also essential. They have a socialist leaning but are not too preachy. Bond's self-educated working-class position gives his articulate essays a powerful punch. (A punch modern society needs.) I would buy these volumes just for these introductions, they are that good!

After this, go on to PLAYS:TWO for the brilliant LEAR.

Prayers for Children (Golden Books)

Authors: Wilkin Eloise and Golden Publishing
Average review score:

I use it in my Sunday school teaching, it is wonderful.
Over the years that I have taught Sunday school I have used this book on many occasions. The words in it are simple enough for small children to say and meaningful enough for us older children to use.

Teach children about prayers.
Good for teaching children on prayers

Predator and Prey
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Simon Pulse (01 December, 2001)
Author: Christopher Golden
Average review score:

Excellent and harrowing!
In the war against the Prowlers, a race of werewolf like creatures that cloak themselves in human skin, Jack Dwyer finds himself facing horrors in the real world and beyond it. Jasmine, the surviving member of Owen Tanzer's pack of Prowlers, has put a hit out on Jack and his friends and family. The hitman is far from human and very cunning. As Jack is trying to contend with this real world threat, Artie reaches out to him from the Ghostlands. Something called "The Ravenous" is killing spirits on the Otherside-- ripping their souls apart and consuming them--and he needs Jack's help in finding out how to stop it... Predator and Prey is the third in Golden's original series. I've been hooked since the first book and the series just gets better with each book. An outstanding horror/action series from an outstanding author. I can't wait until I get my hands on #4, due out in April!

It's time to prey...
A terrifying and deadly creature known as the Ravenous stalks the Ghostlands, and is murdering anyone within it before they can travel to their final destination. When Artie tells Jack of this piece of news, Jack is also aware that the Ravenous is more dangerous than any Prowler he's ever faced. When he barely escapes its clutches, he vows to somehow stop it-- knowing that Artie will be gone forever if this creature isn't stopped in time. But Jack also has to wonder if the truth about Artie be told to Molly, who isn't aware that Jack can see and talk to his dead best friend's ghost. He also has to worry about the constant threat of the murderous Prowlers that prey on innocent people. Even though Tanzer was killed, his successor, Jasmine, is the most dangerous Prowler there is to Jack, Molly, Courtney, Bill, and Artie -- and she may be anywhere, plotting to kill them again. Jack knows that he can take on the Prowlers if they attack him again. But what he doesn't know is that he is about to face his worst and most dangerous enemy in his life... Prowlers #3: Predator And Prey is the best yet of the Prowlers series, and also the most intense. It's action-packed and graphic, but aside from the horror, there lies a brilliant and cunning plot in this masterful third book of Christopher Golden's suspenseful series. I absolutely couldn't put it down.

The Race (Golden Filly Series, Book 1)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (February, 1991)
Author: Lauraine Snelling
Average review score:

I really liked it...
I received this book when I was little and I didn't read it until maybe two years ago...

This book was VERY GOOD...I cannot stress that enough. Even if you aren't a Christian, if you love horses and powerful writing, you'll love this book. I think the seris gets a little cheesy after this because every horse in every racing book wins the triple crown, but anyway..read it...it's inspiring and it's got real problems and real people in it. :)

Really Good!!
I loved this book so much, that I couldn't put it down!! I am also a horse lover, and Spitfire seemed like a dream horse. But when her dad went into the hospital with lung cancer, I cried for a long time. I hope that I can read this whole series and find out what happens!!
